You are here: Home > September 2008 > Avoid Friction By Choosing The Right Lubricant
The last thing you want during masturbation or sexual pleasure is friction and pain. Lubricant has to be one of the basic needs of anyone who enjoys a fumble around.
The thing is, there are more variants of lube than you can shake a stick at, each with a different purpose.
Condoms and lubricant go together like cheese and crackers so I thought I'd head over to British Condoms and take a look at 5 different types of lubricant and the best for each job.

This is our favourite lubricant and we use it all the time.
It's a silky, non-tacky water based lubricant that's great for male or female masturbation as well as sexual intercourse. British Condoms suggest it can be used for a sensual massage but we wouldn't use it for that as it has a pleasant yet noticeable smell. We have used it for genital massage for which it's great!
We've tried other water base lubes before and found some to be tacky and poor quality. Liquid Silk is at the other end of the spectrum. In the 5 years we've been using it, it has never once dried out during usage.
In terms of the technical side, Liquid Silk contains a skin conditioner as well as being bio-static. This means that if it were exposed to any bacteria, yeast infection or fungal spores it will stop them spreading.
This is a general purpose lubricant, especially ideal for masturbation and intercourse. Water based lubes are generally condom friendly though we advise you check the packaging first. These are also generally suitable for use with most sex toys.

At the opposite end of the lubricant scale lies silicone based lubes. They are newer than oil-based lubricants and demonstrate some of the same properties whilst not being damaging to latex based sexual products.
Silicone lubricants have the advantage over water based lubes in that they stay wet for longer as well as being resistant to water. This means that they can be used underwater without wearing away, making them ideal for underwater sex, in a bath or shower for instance.
Pjur Original claims to:
Pjur claim their lubricant is used by massage therapist worldwide, which is certainly an accreditation.
Overall, silicone based lubes are ideal for sex, foreplay and masturbation in and around water, as well as for those that feel that water based lubricants dry too quickly. Generally silicone based lubricants are condom safe but check the packaging first. These aren't generally compatible with silicone based sex toys.

The penis and vagina self-lubricate so not a lot of lube is required to ensure a pleasurable time. The anus and rectum, however, don't self-lubricate so you need a thicker, more powerful lubricant.
Not only do you require a thicker lube, you also need to be careful which one you use. Oil-based lubricants, if not washed off properly, can provide ideal breeding grounds for bacteria and other infections - not pleasant in and around your anus.
Bodywise Maximus is a water based lubricant with a high glycol content which helps to make the lubricant even longer lasting. It is similar to the Liquid Silk product in it's bio-static formulation (prevents bacteria, yeast infection or fungal spores spreading) whilst being thicker.
When looking for anal lube, make sure you choose something thick to help eliminate unpleasant friction.

Flavoured condoms are great for providing safe blowjobs, minimising STD transmission. However, if you and your partner are clean of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and you are both consenting, a naked blowjob can be mind-blowing.
Given that the penis self-lubricants and the mouth salivates, you may be mistaken for thinking you wouldn't need any lube. Sometimes this resulting liquid just isn't enough or the taste is unpleasant for the giver.
Flavoured lubricants offer the benefits of lube together with a pleasant flavour for the giver.
ID Juicy Lube offer flavoured lube which come in a variety of tasty flavours:
British Condoms offer sampler packs of various 'pillows' of flavoured ID Lube which can be handy to decide which large bottle of lube is best to buy, or ideal if you are indecisive and love multiple flavours.

We'd love to write about the various specialist lubricants but just don't have the space. Luckily for us, Durex offer a pack of samplers from their Durex Play range of lubricants.

Remember that people with sensitive skin may be allergic to ingredients in various types of lubricant so you may be wise to buy small sample sachets first, then save money buy buying the largest available container once you've tried and tested it.
British Condoms offer a lubricant sampler pack (Search for "lubricant sampler", price at time of writing: £6.99) which contains 14 trial sachets of most of the lubes discussed in this article.
