LoveHoney Design A Sex Toy 2011 Competition

If you're like us you'll have tested a fair few sex toys in your time and have had many ideas on how such toys could be improved. Our biggest bugbear isthe lack of toys that use sensible battery sizes. Without sounding too old I remember when AA and AAA batteries used to be the norm. Actually I remember some using chunky C and D cell batteries which were much worse to find than the tiny watch sized batteries that so many toys use nowadays. The problem is they all use a different size.

Aside from batteries, we've had many ideas for sex toys for men and women that we'd love to see happen. Roll on the LoveHoney Design A Sex Toy 2011 Competition which offers £1,000 to the person who comes up with the most ingenious new sex toy. All ideas are welcomed and every year LoveHoney get all sorts of entries, from the plain stupid right through to those ideas that you see and think "why doesn't that already exist?".

The competition runs until 30th June 2011 so you've got plenty of time to sketch out your ideas. It doesn't matter how you jot your ideas down. As LoveHoney say, "Design your sex toy by scribbling on a napkin, modelling with Play-Doh or using a computer graphics program - we don't care!".

The judging panel include Bonny Hall (LoveHoney's head buyer for all things naughty and nice), Tracey Cox (LoveHoney's s-expert) and Trevor Murphy, the winner of a previous LoveHoney Design a Sex Toy Competition.

Past Winners

The first winner was Trevor Murphy, the chap that invented the hugely successful Sqweel. Last year's winner was Jenny Smith though her sex toy has yet to be revealed. According to the kind folk inside LoveHoney the toy is still in development and it is planned to be unveiled later this year!

Top Tips

These are only our suggestions so feel free to use them or ignore them!

1. Come up with something unique. Look at the Sqweel and ask yourself if anything like that existed beforehand?
2. Use modern materials in your design. Silicone is hot right now as are rechargeable batteries.
3. Aim for a specific market. Try designing something for the boys, or something for the girls, or for couples. Successful sex toys generally do one thing really well, whilst some may lend themselves to other properties on the back of it's main function. For example, a vibrator can double up as a body massager but that's not the main purpose.
4. Refine your design. Come up with something and look for ways to improve the design.
5. Design with a price in mind. Are you creating something luxurious and expensive or something that can be used once only and is therefore cheaper?
6. Design something you or your partner would use. If you've designed something that you wouldn't dare touch, let alone buy, why would anyone else?
