A while back we told you about the new innovation from Philips, the Philips Dual Intimate Massagers (HF8400/00).
It was a creation from Philips that helped them into the sex toy market. It's a risky business for mainstream manufacturers. Durex moved into the sex toy market after becoming insanely successful in the condom market. They have done well for themselves and have a wide range of sex products. Philips have since decided that they are ready to break into the sex product market and hence released a range of massagers.
The prestigious Philips name has been lent to a range of vibrating massagers designed to help with a specific area: intimate massage. The massagers have been crafted by an expert team of researchers at Philips and as Philips didn't have anything quite like this before, the range has been developed from the ground up. It's not a recycled idea - it's brand new from start to finish. Furthermore, they've then managed to convince mainstream retailers such as Amazon to stock these products, confirming how much belief there is in these products.
Roll on a few months and we've been sent a sample model by Philips to test and review. We put their massagers through their paces and here's what we found.

For what it is, the packaging is somewhat larger than we anticipated. Nevertheless, everything inside is very well protected and is encased in traditional up-market Philips packaging.
The cover sleeve pulls off and the box unfolds into 3 compartments. In the left compartment you'll find the manuals, a charger cable and an adapter. In the centre compartment you'll find the massager charging station and in the right compartment you'll find the massagers themselves.

It's rare to see such a comprehensive set of instructions delivered with what is essentially a lovers product. That said, the documentation tends to focus on maintenance and care rather than how to actually use the product. There is a "quick start" guide with a page of tips for each vibrator but we both felt Philips could have gone one step further here and included a cheat sheet of diagrams demonstrating the product in use.
There are two massagers in this pack - one designed for him and the other for her. Both 'live' within the charging unit which is oval shaped.
The male massager is designed with a long curved ridge designed for massaging the shaft of the penis.

The female massager is larger and contoured to caress the clitoris and labia.

The massagers have been designed to be as 'friendly' to the opposite sex as possible. Philips have recognised that some people are put off of sex toys because some appear to replace a partner. These massagers don't replace a partner in a relationship, they simply help maximise the fun and intimacy between couples.
Both massagers are coated in a soft and smooth silicone. The units are self contained and charging is through the means of induction. This means you don't have to plug anything into the massagers themselves. You pop them into the charger unit, close the lid and they charge, as if by magic!
We started by charging the units. Charging is by means of induction and this apparently takes a little longer than conventional charging. The first charge is around 24 hours long, with subsequent charges taking around 8 hours. The upshot from this is around 1 hours usage which is quite poor from an environmental perspective but perfect for a long intimate massage.

The very nature of the product means that couples could use this together but we opted for the "me first, then you" methodology.
I went first and added a bit of water-based lubricant to the massager. I switched it on and proceeded to use it. The vibrations range from delicate to extremely powerful and the resulting orgasm looked (and sounded) very intense and enjoyable.
There were a couple of issues though. The first was that it was difficult to know how to hold it. It's been designed to be used in a variety of positions but I couldn't quite figure out how. I'm very much a manual person in the sense that I need to see something diagrammatically before I can understand how to replicate the actions. The quick start guide simply explained how to switch it on and change the modes but omitted to include suggestions on how best to use it.
As the product is aimed at couples who perhaps are somewhat scared of sex toys that make one partner redundant, I felt this had been overlooked.
Another issue I had was with the controls. When you switch the unit on, a trail of white light glows around the buttons. This is great as it easily shows the product is switched on. The problem I have is that it's impossible to see the picture on each of the buttons in dim light. What I would have liked to have seen was for each of the pictures on the buttons to glow. So, when the unit is switched on, the "+", the "-" and the "o" would all glow, in addition to the current light trail. It's not detrimental to the functionality of the massager, more like a niggle.

Mrs STS had a great time using this and didn't have any complaints, other than the fact the massager becomes slippery when used with lube - a couple of times it shot out from her hand.
The shape is perfect and it is instantly obvious on how to hold and use this massager. The size is great and as a result, it is easy to move around.
From my perspective, the vibrations felt powerful enough and the variety of programme settings meant it didn't get boring.
By it's very design, this is certainly a product for couples. It's not your run-of-the-mill sex toy however. We'd still brand it a sex toy but it's in a completely different league to rabbits, dildos and butt plugs.
It's a product perfect for erotic massage. It's designed for external use only so it's destined to be used to excite the penis and testicles for men and the clitoris and labia for women. Sure it can be used elsewhere but these are the areas predominantly suited to the Phillips massagers.
If you've never had an erotic massage, you're missing out
. For those that understand the love of erotic massage, this product certainly helps. It's design could be more refined and it could really benefit from so "quick start" diagrams but on the whole, it's very good at what it is designed to do: massage.
In a nutshell, it's certainly worth buying though it's probably not going to get as much use as your dedicated sex toys. When you're after a bit of sensual fun time or you want to rekindle some passion and intimacy in your relationship through massage, the Philips Dual Massagers are superb.
